Dr. Kirsch:

I just wanted to let you know that I am doing well one month after the UAE. Having undergone a myomectomy in the past with only limited results, I must admit I was uncertain if I would see any immediate effects. Surprisingly, once I returned to work following the two-week follow-up appointment, I could feel an immediate difference in my stamina levels. I have a rather grueling commute to work from Baltimore to Arlington, VA, but I am no longer exhausted at the end of the day, I do not have to race to the bathroom upon arrival at work, and running for the train or taking stairs no longer leaves me feeling as if I had run a marathon. Also, I felt a sense of clarity that I have not felt in a long time. For some reason, the anemia and fatigue impacted my memory and my ability to think clearly on some days. And, although I still experienced some cramping as in the past, my first period post UAE has been greatly reduced. Can I expect my periods to get even lighter in the coming months if the fibroids continue to shrink? In any event, I am hoping that the improvements that I have seen thus far will be sustained over the long term.

I also wanted to thank you and your staff for the patience and support provided during and after the UAE procedure. I appreciate the calls, follow-up, and quick responses. I want to compliment you on your caring and compassionate bedside manner. You may not recall that when you came to check on me following the procedure, I grabbed your hand as if it were a lifeline (probably not something that happens with too many patients). I think that this was indicative of the high level of anxiety I felt in the weeks preceding the procedure and the stress associated increasingly bothersome fibroid symptoms. In any event, in addition to the sedatives and painkillers administered, I guess I needed a little human contact to augment my recovery. Thanks for understanding.

Sorry for the long e-mail; I know you are busy. Thanks again from UAE patient #20XX!
T.K.,

Dear Dr. Kirsch:

After wasting 15 months on other procedures and medications (including endometrial biopsy, edometrial ablation, norethindrone, and three different strengths of birth control pills--double dose), being anemic and having to take high doses of iron, and being hospitalized and requiring a blood transfusion, I have had all my complications from fibroid tumors resolved with the UAE. This procedure was short, simple and recovery time was 3-4 days. I wish I had known about it sooner.

Thank you,

Dear Dr. Kirsch:

I am still feeling fine now two months having the Embolization procedure. I think the worst part was trying to sleep the night of the surgery with the IV in my arm. That probably was the most uncomfortable part of the procedure. Maybe tablets for pain control would be better for me next time. I had some cramping but not too strong in relation to the discomfort of the continuous bleeding I experienced for a year prior to the procedure. If anyone hesitates going forward with the procedure, advise them to NOT READ THE JUNK on the internet that doesn't help and is not reliable.

Dear Dr. Kirsch:

It has been one month since my uterine artery embolization and I feel great! Immediately, this procedure had dramatic effects on my life. The bleeding/flooding and the anxiety it caused has completely stopped. I have been able to go out and not worry that I will be caught somewhere with bleeding issues. The pressure on my bladder has begun to lessen and I no longer need to take iron pills. Its just nice to be normal again. I am eager to see what my next ultrasound shows. I appreciate your responsiveness to every detail and concern I have had and want to thank you for your work.

DEAR DR. ROBERT BERKOWITZ & DR. WORTHINGTON-KIRSCH:

I am patient #268 for Embolization that was done on 8/13/98. All I can say is, THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU. I have my life back. Further to my 3 month ultrasound on 12/4/98 and Dr. Berkowitz confirmation on 12/14/98, it was very successful. Not only did I avoid major surgery (the recommended hysterectomy by my former doctor), but I was much quicker at getting back on my feet. Other than the side effects of the 2nd lupron injection wearing off, the embolization was a breeze to recover from. I am back at full steam with a clean house, happy children, an extra happy husband and my volunteer work resumed. One year ago at this time, it was "couch time two weeks out of the month" to recover from excessive periods due to two large fibroids. I am now very predictable, no longer anemic, and extremely happy and satisfied without the pain or excessive bleeding at any unexpected time. I can only say thank you for THE FIBROID CORNER WEB SITE which saved me from a hysterectomy and allowed me to meet the wonderful staff of the Hutchins Institute, Dr. Berkowitz, Roxborough Memorial Hospital and Dr. Worthington-Kirsch.

I hope your holidays are as wonderful as mine.

Thank you both.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Donnelly [note: Mr. Donnelly is President of Roxborough Memorial Hospital]

On October 30, 1998, I was admitted to Roxborough to have the uterine artery embolization procedure performed by Dr. Robert Kirsch. Since I had never been hospitalized previously, I did not know what to expect.

All of the hospital staff I encountered were friendly, helpful and extremely compassionate. The admissions person did not just tell me where the lab was. She escotred me there. After going through admissions, the nurse who prepared me for my stay made sure that my valuables were safe and that I could easily retrieve them upon discharge on Saturday. Then the ultrasound technicians put me at ease. Even the nurses who administered my medication and took my vital signs in the middle of the night were wonderful. I could go on and on. In short, my experience, from admission to discharge, was outstanding!! If I had known that being hospitalized was so pleasurable, I'd have done it a long time ago.

Since this is my first hospital stay, your organization has set a very high standard for any future hospital care I might need. Also, I am telling all women interested in the uterine artery embolization procedure to have it done by Dr. Kirsch at Roxborough.

The staff at Roxborough should be commended. They definitely know how to take care of patients.

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

I would like to express my gratitude to you and the staff at RMH for your professionalism and kindness during my stay last week (This note was sent 1 week after her UAE). Everyone I dealt with was most accommodating and (other than a lesson in veganism for the kitchen staff) I could not have asked for better treatment. My pre-op and op nurses were especially kind.

The headache I mentioned to you on the phone last Saturday dissipated after I ate (I hadn't been eating.) My first serious discomfort came on Monday but was easily handled by the meds. I get twinges of sharp pain on occasion but they last only a second or two. My main discomfort is best decribed as a pressure and/or a tight knot in my abdomen. My worst day was yesterday, Thursday, although there has been nothing so far that wasn't relieved by the aspirin and an occcasional Percocet. I do what I can and rest when I must. I trust the near future will be basically the same.

I am very grateful to you for making the option of UAE available. I will do what I can to educate other women about this procedure. Thanks again for everything.

Sincerely,

I must first thank you for the quality of information on your website. In this part of the world where I live we are only conversant with three modalities of treatment for fibroids namely myomectomy, hysterectomy and more recently drugs. The inclusion of these new treatment options is heart warming.

Thanks so much for all the information. It's very kind of you to respond to e-mails of those you haven't even met. I've gained a wealth of knowledge since visiting your website and as a result, I am asking intelligent questions of my doctor, and am making informed decisions about my care. I don't feel like a scared little puppy anymore. I'm empowered!!

Thanks again.

Hi Dr. K.:

I had an interesting encounter with a woman yesterday who is going to have a hysty. She's a student in my class (I teach for the Reserves). She said that she's having her procedure 17 Nov. I asked her if she knew that she had options. She said she did but she's so tired of the complications that she just wants her uterus out.

I asked her if her doctor told her that this is not life-threatening. She said yes, but she was talking about tumors and malignancy, which led me to believe that she wasn't that educated about it at all.

Her case is bad--she had to have a transfusion this summer. She's suffered and she's tired of it. But, I still don't understand how and why she just wants to throw away her uterus to take care of the problem.

It makes me sad and just more determined to get the news out that there are options.

Hello Dr. Kirsch!

I doubt that you remember me personally (I was your 404th UAE), but I thought you'd enjoy hearing the rest of my story.

Since my procedure on March 16, 1999 my symptoms improved tremendously. No more pain and very little bleeding. Upon my 9 month follow-up exam with Dr. W M at the local medical center (which happens to be a major teaching hospital elsewhere in the country- RWK), we discovered that one walnut-sized fibroid (previously reported as golf-ball size) still remained smack in the middle of my uterus. The other multiple fibroids were no longer visible via ultrasound. He encouraged me to have that last visible fibroid removed if I wanted to become pregnant. Although that was my original goal (albeit I was very aware of what a long shot that was from the beginning), I wasn't eager to undergo surgery, no matter how minor he said it would be.

Well, in June of this year I caved and scheduled the surgery - hysteroscopic resection. On July 10th Dr. M removed the fibroid. He said he made a few passes at it then it just fell off. (This is pretty common. Hysteroscopic resections after UAE are usually surprisingly easy for the operating gynecologist - RWK)

Now for the rest of the story... I'm pregnant! Tomorrow will be 10 weeks. The pregnancy sickness has been just horrible, but it's a price I'm more than willing to pay. Other than that I couldn't be happier!! I guess I should post my news to the Embo group.

Now my focus is on how my scar-filled uterus will respond to the stretching demands over the next several months. Has there been any research or follow-up on post-UAE pregnancies? I've found a new local OB here in town, that came highly recommended, but I doubt she or her partners have much (if any) experience with post-UAE patients (I'll be asking on my next visit). Is there a resource she might consult for information? (She should have no problems. Pregnancies after UAE have been about the same as for women the same age in the general population - RWK) Words alone can never express how thankful I (and my husband) are for all that you've done for me and other patients like me. I hope you find great satisfaction in knowing you were instrumental in not only improving my well-being, but also in helping to make our dream of parenthood a reality.

May God bless you and keep you well.

Hi Dr. Kirsch,

I am back to work now and I have mailed to you my final benefits form to be completed and sent to ... Your office should be receiving the form shortly. Please tell Pat and Maryann that I said "thank you" for all of their help. I also want to THANK YOU for being such a wonderful doctor. I am feeling absolutely great. You are the best! I am so grateful to you and your staff. I was treated so good during my short stay at the hospital that I didn't want to leave. The nurses were wonderful and treated me like a queen. It was like being on vacation LOL! Thanks again.

Hello Dr. Kirsch,

I seem to have missed my 3-month check up following my UAE. We have been finalizing our daughter's adoption and just returned from overseas where we picked her up.

Anyways, I have absolutely no problems to report. Everything is going super... My doctor requested that I have an ultrasound done which I had done on July 7 (about 5 weeks after her UAE - RWK). They found no shrinkage of the fibroid but I know that something has changed in there. I don't have the bulk feeling anymore or the pressure that I once had and I have so far managed to keep off the 14 pounds that I originally lost...

The UAE has worked so well for me and turned out to be the best choice that I could have made!!! Thank you for everything that you did-I can't believe the difference the surgery made!!!

Thank you.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

Last month, August 9th, you performed the Embolization procedure on me and I just wanted to take a few minutes of your time to update you on how I'm doing. The last time I spoke to you, you were on your way to Virginia for vacation. You so graciously took time to call me while driving, in response to a call I made to you. Not too many doctors would have done that. When I last spoke to you, I expressed concern to you about whether or not I should expect my menstrual cycle to begin at its scheduled time. It was due around either the 16th or 17th of August. You stated that it may not come at that time because the cycle maybe somewhat off schedule. It didn't come on. I worried that I might be like the woman whose period didn't come on for six months. (It would have been a nice break, but I still wanted it to come on) I never thought I would say that! You also mentioned that when my period does return, I may experience more pain than usual.

Well, the good news is, my period returned on Sept. 4th. Prior to coming on I had some misery for a short period of time and I wondered what brought that on, but later found out that my period had returned. I was pleasantly surprised. Again, I never thought that I would ever say that I was glad to see it , considering all the previous problems that I had with it. The reason why I was glad was because I just wanted to return to normalcy. This also allowed me to know that I still have a chance at pregnancy. The difference between then (before embolization) and now is tremendous. The bleeding was normal or light in comparison to the excessive bleeding that I was used to. It lasted just a few days(4). However, I continued to wear protection thinking more would come. I'm not used to this (smile). Also, my discomfort was minimal, I expected more pain. I took Motrin in the morning once a day and didn't need it again. I retuned back to work on Sept. 5th, with no complications. I was able to work without being so self conscious about it as I had in the past. I don't know if my period will be as easy next month as it had been this month, but I do know one thing, I won't worry or fear it returning again. The difference is like night and day.

Dr. Kirsch, I thank God that I found out that such a procedure existed and I thank God for you . You are a skilled, terrific doctor who cares about his patients. The few days of pain that I had to endure subsequent to the procedure was worth it.

May God bless you and keep you so that you may continue to change and enhance the lives of many more women who suffered with fibroids.

Sincerely,
B.I.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

First I would like to thank you very much for performing my UAE. The nurses and support staff at Roxborough Memorial hospital were wonderful as well. I have thought about writing to you almost everyday over the last 3 months to tell you how well I have been feeling, but been busy, as usual. I would like to appolagize for not writing to you earlier.

Here's a synopsis of my health over the past 3 months:

I cannot say that during or right after the procedure I felt any serious pain. I stuck to the Motrin you prescribed to me for the 10 days and did'nt really feel any pain, maybe just mild cramps, like those experienced during a regular period. I did'nt have to take the stronger pain killer that you had prescribed. I felt perfectly fine just 2 days after the procedure and was able to go jogging in just after a week. I felt absolutely normal after the first week, and was able to resume all my regular activities.

During the first week (right after my UAE) I got my period which was very light, just had to use one napkin a day for 3 days. The following month I got my period which was also very light. I have had 4 periods in the last 3 months ( first one being right after the procedure, the timing makes sense, since it was a month after the Lupron had worn out when I had the UAE performed). The last 2 periods were heavier than the first 2 but considerably lighter than any period I have ever had in my life. I dont know if this is particularly bad, but so far I have no complaints.

This has improved my quality of life dramatically. My only concern is still my ability to have children in the future and now we just have to wait and see. Every thing else has been good thanks to you. From an inconsequential cosmetic point of view, my stomach is as flat as a board, you'll have to see it to believe it. I went from 20 weeks to a flat stomach, the results are pretty dramatic, personally for me since I have been following my stomach closely over the last few months.

I have an ultrasound and an appointment to see my OBGYN next week. I will write to you after that so that you are informed of my progress. I also have an appointment to see you at the end of this month. I will forward the ultra sound results to you next week when I get my ultrasound done.

On a more altruistic note. I really wish OBGYNs would be more receptive to the idea of UAEs and would get more educated about it. I got no help from my OBGYN after the procedure, even with simple OBGYN related questions, possibly because she did'nt want any liability. Her standard response was "I did'nt perform the procedure, I cant really help you". Her utter lack of interest in my situation considering I was her patient, was pretty frustrating. I am sure as we speak many women are having hystorectomies and myomectomies for fibroids, not knowing that they might have alternatives which could be much better for them. I think we need to keep track of the progress of UAE patients so that 5 years from now OBGYNs will still not say that there is no sufficient data etc., and dissuade patients from having them. I am sure you are working towards it, but as a patient, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Once again thank you very much for being my doctor and helping me out. I am sure you'll be glad to learn that for me the results have been very good. Please feel free to contact me anytime, if you have any questions. I wish you all the luck and continued success in your pioneering efforts in this area.

Best Regards,

Dr. Kirsch,

Seldom in my daily life do I come across anyone who impresses me as much as you and your staff. Actually the entire staff at Roxborough Hospital could not have been more accommodating.

Your website has been invaluable, along with the time you spent explaining the UAE to me.

I thank you for your caring, compassion, and expertise. Without your confidence I would not have had the procedure.

You are to be commended for the work you do and the staff you have chosen.

Thank you again for everything.

Just wanted to echo the comments of several other women that have written to your website about the UAE procedure. If it wasn't for your website I would have never known about this option, it was not one that my primary care or my gynecologist suggested for treatment of my fibroids. Because of the information available I was able to inform my doctors of what I wanted done.

I searched out a reputable doctor in my area and am glad to say that I had the procedure done one month ago. I had to fight with my insurance company, but it was all worth it. I want to let people know not to give up, keep yourself informed and talk honestly with your doctors, don't let them force you into a procedure you are not comfortable with. In just a month my stomach size has gone down and my cycle was much lighter without all the cramping that I use to have.

The UAE procedure was worth fighting for, I'm beginning to feel normal again!

Thanks for keeping people informed.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that i think your site is excellent!!!! It is very easy to understand and informative. at my yearly checkup I described some changes to my Dr about my menstrual cycle and he sent me for an ultrasound and said he just wanted to check for fibroids and then this week I got the call that something showed up and my Dr wants to see me first thing Monday morning, well to say the least I am scared!!

So I came on here to see just what a fibroid is(if that's what my Dr is going to tell me Monday) and after reading your site I am not in such a panic as I was...I got the call on Wednesday and I have to wait until Monday(he's on vacation!!)

That's a pretty long time to wonder, so I am just keeping my fingers crossed and praying and since he was checking for a fibroid, I wanted to know what I was going to be dealing with and at least now I know some of my options if needed I guess depending on size, location, etc...at least I'm not going to worry as much all weekend wondering...if it ends up being something else, well I'll just have to deal with it then.

I just want to thank you for such a wonderful site!!

Just a note of thanks for producing a very helpful and informative website.

I am 28 years old, and have recently been diagnosed with fibroids. I have no children so the possibility of a hysterectomy is not an option I would even consider. Thank you for providing a site that gave me a good explanation of what fibroids are, and what options are available for treatment.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

I received the letter that you sent to Dr. LS (her gynecologist) concerning my UAE last August. I am thrilled about the results!

I want to thank you because you changed my life. I would have had a hard time in school this year. I would have had to take a few days off each month.

The only negative comment I have is that I'm so sorry that Dr. LS DIDN'T send me to you before he did.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

I am very grateful for your website. I am a registered nurse working in L&D so I am aware of what a fibroid is, but when this happened to me, I felt helpless and scared. Being a healthcare professional doesn't help, because I am aware of all the surgical complications and the fear is intensified. Your website answered all of my questions and I was able to do the research so that when I go back and speak to my doctor, I know what questions to ask him. He is a busy Ob/Gyn so even though I trust him, he is sending me to a colleague for treatment because she does the new types of surgery, other than hysterectomy. Now I know what my option are and what is involved with each one.

Medicine is changing so rapidly, that it is impossible to keep up with all the new procedures available today. Thank you so much for explaining my options in a way I can understand.

I had an abdominal myomectomy 7 years before my UAE. I was 41. As a solution for fibroids, myomectomy does have real disadvantages. The recovery is long (it took me 8 weeks to recover, and the first two weeks were NOT easy), the risks are higher (I needed a transfusion after the surgery--luckily I'd banked my own blood), and worst of all, there is a high recurrence rate (I've read anywhere from 35 - 80%). I had seven fibroids removed, and four years later I developed 2 more. The first bunch had caused discomfort and pressure, but the second two caused severe bleeding. I have a friend who had two myomectomies and is now scheduling a UAE at age 50.

In my own experience, there is no question that a UAE is far preferable in terms of recovery and results. After the UAE my uterus has shrunk from 14 weeks back to normal size, and my fibroids shrunk by 60%. I was back to work 6 days after the UAE and am feeling great. After my myo, I couldn't exercise for months; with the UAE I was lifting weights in 2 weeks.

Message posted to the "Embo" list at egroups.com on April 29, 2000 (used by permission of the author)

I must admit to amazement over the number of women on this list recently who seem to be waffling between UAE and hysterectomy as if (1) they are somehow roughly equivalent in impact, and (2) they are the only two options for treating fibroids.

Maybe here lately there's been too much emphasis on the pain and unpredictability of short-term results with UAE, and it's time to regain a little perspective, and remind ourselves of its advantages.

I think UAE is almost a miracle treatment in the way it so precisely targets the problem--the fibroids--with no collateral damage. Yes, UAE can be painful for many usually for only a few days, but its advantages over all the other alternative procedures (especially over hysterectomy) seem to me overwhelming:

  • In the vast majority of cases IT WORKS.
  • It's a non-surgical treatment, and doesn't leave a big ugly scar.
  • It leaves you with all your parts.
  • It leaves you with the ability to have children.
  • It doesn't require days of hospitalization and weeks of recovery.
  • It's a lot less painful than recovery from hysterectomy.
  • It's much safer than the other procedures; the risks of complications are much lower than with surgery.
  • As far as we can tell, it's "durable"--no fibroids do not grow back. You treat every one of them, not just the largest (as myomectomy does).
  • You don't risk sexual functioning being impaired--a common problem after hysterectomy.
  • You can still have some other procedure, including hysterectomy, if for some reason you don't get the results you want. No harm has been done.

After a few months or a year you're likely to feel exactly like your pre-fibroid self. What better outcome could you ask for?

I would encourage anyone with problematic fibroids to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about and supportive of UAE, get screened to find out if she's a candidate for UAE, and if so to simply go for it. I just can't see anything to lose, for the typical case with no special factors (like adenomyosis, etc.).

If the UAE does not provide relief, then other treatments to be explored include myolysis, myomectomy, hysteroscopic resection, even endometrial ablation for severe bleeding. I even heard of one woman who had a myomectomy afterward, simply to get the flattest possible tummy. But the myomectomy was much simpler and safer because the fibroids had been embolized and had infarcted.

Don't fool yourself; hysterectomy is a radical treatment, and should be done only as a last resort. To use it to treat fibroids seems like treating a wart by cutting off your finger: Yes, it gets rid of the wart, alright, and it won't come back.

It's really serious, major abdominal surgery (whether done via a large external incision or not). Hysterectomy takes away something irreplaceable; many women have long-term negative effects and great regrets over having it done.

Ladies, I know fibroid symptoms can be physically and psychologically debilitating, and you can at times feel almost desperate and willing to do ANYTHING, but try not to panic. This is seldom a life-threatening condition (major hemorrhaging being the most dangerous situation I'm aware of), so you really do have time to weigh your options.

You are absolutely right to be reluctant about having a hysterectomy. It's not something to be undertaken casually, even if the doctor tries to make it seem so (as mine did).

Please don't let a doctor (or doctors) push you toward hysterectomy because it's the way s/he has always done it, it's more convenient (for whom?), or "UAE is too experimental," (That's simply no longer true.), or (the worst) "You just don't need that uterus anymore anyway." Yes, you get to choose. It's your body; take good care of it.

Sorry for such a long post. Just wanted to put in my two cents worth.

Thank you...Thank you...Thank you, God!!! I knew there was an answer to this.

You don't know how happy I am to learn that there is an alternative to hysterectomy/hormones.

Every doctor I have talked with encourages hysterectomy first, then alternatives such as birth control pills, etc. These are not a solution or an alternative as far as I am concerned. I would like to know what side effects and other health risks are in involved in this procedure.

I am very grateful to have found a knowledgeable site which spoke to my concerns in a very clear fashion. I am a 68-year-old female recently diagnosed with a fibroid and the thickening of the endrometrium. A change of hormone replacement therapy was prescribed and the pelvic ultrasound repeated two months later. The thickening had diminished but no change in the fibroid was noted. I was told that my condition was normal for a woman my age, but was unsure how to proceed, since I have a severely distended abdomen. I look 4 months pregnant, and no amount of exercise will mitigate it. However, after reading your website, I am relieved and more aware of the options. I will accept my situation with equanimity, yet keep a "weather eye" open for any change of symptom. I do thank you most sincerely for helping to make a more informed judgment and giving me a measure of peace of mind. You do all women who visit your site a great service. May you receive in return ten times the value you are giving.

Today I was diagnosed with fibroids. Feeling that I needed more information than my doctor gave me, I decided to research this subject. I express my gratitude for having this website and educating me. I feel fortunate for having this tool available. We live in an era where the doctor does not take the time to explain illnesses and treatments thoroughly. Now that I have this knowledge I can comfortably discuss the treatments available to me.

Thank You!

I have had fibroids for the past five years and last May 1999 when I went to my doctor, he said if they get bigger, I would need surgery. He told me to come back in six months. Well, the six months are here. I have an apt. November 16, 1999. I am doing some research before hand to be informed. I don't know what is going to happen. I overheard someone at work speaking about this and she gave me the name of this web site. It is very good and easy to understand. Thanks.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

I just realized I haven't let you know how great I am feeling these days. Since you performed my UAE on March 27, 2001, I never again got my period or any other bleeding whatsoever as of yet. I began 3 months of hot flashes, which ended in July (This patient was 48 years old on the day of her UAE. About 10-15% of women over 45 will have cessation of periods after UAE.). Since then I have never felt better. Thanks to the surgery I feel like I got my life back. (Corny as it sounds.) Although I thought my 3 week recovery from the UAE wasn't as easy as I expected, since then I've felt great. I am so glad to have met you and gone thru this. I feel like I've put 2 lousy years of bleeding and anemia behind me.

Physically and mentally I feel great and owe it to UAE changing my life.

Just thought you'd like to hear my thoughts.

Today, I had my consultation with Dr. Hutchins. I was very please with his demeanor, knowledge and interest in hearing what I had to say and ensuring that I understood his medical opinion. This has definitely been an experience, which has begun to restore my trust in the medical profession. The last 5 weeks have been hit or miss.

Dr. Kirsch

You performed my UAE in December of 2000, and now I need to schedule my 3 month follow-up ultrasound...

For your records, all (underlined) my pre-UAE symptoms have been relieved. My menstrual periods since the procedure have been unremarkable, and each one has been lighter than the previous one. In addition, my lower abdomen has become softer. At my annual Ob/Gyn exam (6 weeks post-UAE) my gynecologist commented that my uterus had decreased in size.

Dr. Kirsch, I am grateful that you have chosen to specialize in a procedure that is such a wonderful alternative to hysterectomy. I have spoken about the procedure to several women's and business networking groups I belong to and have offered to be a resource for anyone needing more information. All my best to you in your continued efforts.

Since 1999, I experienced so much uncertainty with my fertility, because of the uterine fibroids, that I feel I need to convey my story to other women so they will not go through all the anguish I did.

1999, at the age of 37, was the year I was diagnosed as having fibroids. At that time I did nothing because of lack of knowledge.

2001 was the year I found out about the Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) procedure from Hope Waltman. This was also the year I had my second ultrasound, which showed my fibroids had grown almost double the size since 1999. When I first heard about the procedure, I thought this is too good to be true. After constant research, I decided that UAE was the perfect solution for me.

During my annual pap smear (which was ordered by Dr. Robert Worthington-Kirsch in preparation for the UAE procedure), my family doctor felt the fibroids. One of my doctor's comments was "you might want to think about getting a hysterectomy". This made me really mad, since my doctor was not a specialist or anything, just a family doctor! I feel doctors, more than anyone, should realize the affect of what they say to patients. Besides the statement, my doctor knew she was performing the pap smear in prep for an ultrasound exam, which was in turn a prep for the UAE. If the doctor doesn't know medically, what is going on, that doctor should shut up!

2002, at the age of 40, the year the UAE was performed on me. The process was very efficient from check in through check out. I found every one involved in the process were very professional, helpful and concerned. My recovery time was actually only seven days.

My first period after the UAE was on time and a whole lot lighter than any previous cycles. The results were (Uterus a 34% REDUCTION, Right Mid-body: a 56% REDUCTION, Upper Body: 61% REDUCTION, Anterior Fundal: a 50% REDUCTION).

Now, in 2002, I am looking forward to getting pregnant! I feel I have the best chance of conceiving because I had the UAE procedure done and it WORKED GREAT!!

I'm glad to have found a place where people understand my not wanting a hysterectomy. My mom, female friends, husband, my doctor - everyone thinks I should just get rid of the problem by "taking it all out." After all, I don't need it anymore, they say. Well, now I'm much more familiar with the options. Thank you.

I almost bleed to death, in menopause totally confused. I read books talked to several health practioners whom I trusted and due my age 54 everyone seemed to recommend a hysterectomy. I had read about UAE in serveral of the books I had purchased. One week prior to having a hysterectomy I contacted your web site, read the patient comments and decided to have a UAE. Well I have not looked back since. My uterus was the size of a 5 month pregnancy. I had my surgery September 26, 2000, one day stay in the hospital and I went back to work in one week.

Now six months later my uterus is half that size, no more bleeding no complications. I have a new life. When the doctor told me I did not need my uterus any more I wanted to slap him. How dare he. The really sad thing is that there are so many women who have lost their uterus needlessly. I had to go outside of the Kaiser system to find a doctor who looked at my history and said I think you would be a perfect candidate for UAE. He gave me the name of a doctor in Kaiser at another location within 20 miles of the Kaiser doctor that wanted to take my uterus. When I called to cancel the hysterectomy the doctor called and asked why? I told him and asked him had he ever heard of the UAE procedure. His response was "Yes, I went to a seminar once". How sad !!! I am so grateful for this web site. Thank you again for everything. My only hope and prayer is that more doctors become aware and educate themselves about this procedure. Women do need their female organs. Yes! I know this procedure is in its infancy and right now I feel fantastic. I'll write you again six months from now. I trust my life will continue to be great with great sex, a flat stomach, and no bleeding. YEAH !!!!!

When originally diagnosed with fibroids in February, an abdominal hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes was recommended, though these additional organs were healthy. I then found this website which also led me to books on the subject of alternatives to hysterectomy, and opted for embolization. The day after the procedure, I enjoyed a gentle tour of the zoo.

The day before my two-week check-up I was loading pumpkins and bales of straw onto a truck at our farm, then drove the 7 hours from my home to Philadelphia for the exam, at which the fibroids were found to have decreased from a 20-week to a 16-week size. I've had no cramping, no fever, no discomfort, and have required no painkillers.

I can't express how grateful I am that this alternative exists, and am deliriously happy with the results! In addition, I'm grateful to the staff at both the Hutchins Institute and Roxborough Memorial Hospital for their professionalism and their friendly and helpful manner; from admissions through discharge, I never doubted that I was receiving the absolute best of care.

Dear Dr. Kirsch:

I wanted to thank you again for the excellent care I received from you, your staff, and the staff of Roxborough Memorial Hospital throughout the process of my UAE. I found the entire procedure was very easy thanks to the exceptional work you all did.

My procedure was 7 weeks ago on April 9. I have noticed less bulk and pressure in my abdomen from my enlarged uterus, and less pressure on my bladder. My back also seems to be stronger with some of the weight taken off of it. I will be eager to see the results of my 3 month ultrasound!

Thanks again. I would have no trouble recommending you and this procedure to other women.

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Worthington-Kirsch,

This is M.T. I think I was patient #301, who had uterine embolization done on 10/X/98. Since that time, my life has returned to normal. I had no problem with the procedure, and got back on my period cycle very quickly. My periods are back to the way they were in my teens and 20's. I feel very fortunate that my sister saw your web site and that I had the procedure done...

My research of the UAE procedure over the last six months always led back to The Fibroid Corner. I was not only impressed by the number of procedures that you had performed, but also by the letters form your patients praising you and the staff at R.M.H. (Roxborough Memorial Hospital).

Arriving in a strange city and having to contend with all the unknowns - hospital, Dr., medical procedure, etc. was a little unnerving to say the least. When you introduced yourself to me while I was waiting to have my blood drawn I immediately felt relaxed and confident that all would be OK!

You do a tremendous job and your calling suits you well. If only all healers were as kind and compassionate as you! Keep up the great work so that many more women may benefit.

Hi Dr. Kirsch,

I had the UAE procedure done on Jan. 04, 2000. My first ultrasound, after the UAE, showed that I had a 21% reduction of the uterus. My most recent ultrasound (11/01) shows a 53% reduction. The UAE was the best option for me; I have no regrets. I've visited my gyn/ob since then and received little or no positive remarks about what I had done. She still wants me to have a hysterectomy. My heavy periods are now very moderate. I also have lost the bulk feeling in my stomach area. Again, I have no regrets in getting this done and thanks to you and the wonderful staff at the Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

Letter Received Oct. 5, 1999

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

Just wanted to drop you a line to tell you I feel terrific. So this is what normal is. I had two down days after the surgery. By the third day I was feeling pretty good. I don't know how it goes for those who choose conscious sedation, but I think that the spinal was the way to go. When you read how painful it is supposed to be after the procedure, it scares you because you know what you have endured up to that point. The day after the procedure was the only day that I had to take pain medication. Pretty incredible.

I was hesitant about writing cause I kept thinking that the bad things would come back, so I kept waiting and nothing! It has been three months since my surgery and I'm about to schedule my ultrasound.

Please accept my sincere thanks and pass them along to Gara and the staff at Roxborough. Everyone was exceptional. As chicken as I was, month after month, pain, bleeding, clotting, frequent urination, total exhaustion, insurance appeals, etc., I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I appreciated your confident, skillful and efficient manner that made the day of the procedure go so smoothly. Thanks a million.

Very truly yours,

Sent by: L.D. To: Danielle Subject: Medical Referral

Hi Danielle,

I hope that this note finds you doing well as the summer fast approaches. Sue told me in confidence that you are having some issues with "fibroid tumors". Having been through 2 medical procedures in the last 6 years for fibroids, I would consider myself, not an "expert", but maybe a "semi-pro" on the subject.

I had a myomectomy 6 years ago to remove 1 large fibroid that had begun to "degenerate". I was hospitalized for 5 days and out on disability for 8 weeks and have a nasty 4 inch long scar to prove it. The recovery was slow and painful, much like that of a C-Section (so I'm told).

In December of 2000, I had another procedure called a Uterine Artery Embolization, where the arteries that feed the tumors were blocked with tiny plastic particles. This essentially cuts off the blood supply to the tumors, causing them to shrink and eventually disappear. I am happy to say that at my follow up visit last week, my uterus measures 61% less than the size that it was in December. Many of my symptoms associated with fibroids (heavy cycle, bloated full feeling, frequent urination) have substantially subsided as well.

The "UAE" is considered a short procedure with an overnight hospital stay. The procedure is considered non-invasive as the only incision is 1/8 inch incision in the groin area where a catheter is inserted to inject the particles. My recovery was 7 days total, with significant functionality within 2 days of having the procedure.

Point is, if you are having problems with your fibroids, or being told by your GYN that you should have a myomectomy. . . . . . I strongly suggest that you contact Dr. Robert Worthington-Kirsch to see if you can be a candidate for UAE. His information is as follows:

Dr. Robert Worthington-Kirsch Image Guided Surgery Associates, PC 5735 Ridge Avenue, Suite 106 Philadelphia, PA 19128 office@igsapc.com

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kirsch and his staff. His credentials speak for themselves (he's a graduate of MIT). His professionalism and beside manner were superb (he called me from his vacation 2 days after my procedure to "see how I was doing".) Dr. Kirsch has a wonderful, compassionate staff that assists him in a procedure that made an immediate difference in my life.

I hope that you find this information helpful. I certainly would not take the time to share this much if I didn't think it was worth your investigating this option. If you have any questions or want to talk, you know where to reach me. Best of Luck!

Take Care,
L.D.

I just wanted to thank Dr. Worthington-Kirsch for developing a web site to help women, who do not want to be victimized by having hysterectomy and being stripped of the part that makes you feel like a woman. If I did not find this web-site, I like other woman who think that hysterectomy is the only option who have had a hysterectomy done a few months ago. But I opted for a UAE. This procedure totally changed my life. I have been suffering from fibroids for the past 9 years, since the age of 28. I was told this past June that I would have to have a hysterectomy because my fibroids had grown so large that my uterus was the size of a 5 month pregnant woman. But, I found this the Fibroid Corner web-site and have never looked back since. Since the UAE procedure in July 20, 1999, I feel like a new person. I no longer suffer from the heavy bleeding, my hemoglobin has returned to normal and my stomach no longer protrudes like I am pregnant. I have no regrets. Thank you Dr. Kirsch for the excellent work that you are doing. You were a god send.

I am a 29-year-old woman who was diagnosed with fibroids 3 years ago. There is a lot of uncertainty among health care providers concerning this issue. Since finding out that I have them, I've always been on the look out and actively in search of information concerning fibroids. Dear Drs. Hutchins and Kirsch

I can't believe it! A year ago this web site didn't exist. I recall when I spoke to Dr. Kirsch about the Internet in December of 1996, I mentioned that I couldn't find anything on the WEB about the Uterine Artery Embolization procedure. I couldn't find it, because it wasn't on the Internet yet.

I wanted to research the procedure before I had it performed. Obviously, that did not occur since I had the UAE procedure, performed by Dr. Kirsch, on January 16, 1997 and was patient #7.

I'm so pleased this site is here to help others like me. To have this important information available to women with fibroids is critical. Making informed decisions about our bodies and procedures that impact the quality of our lives is something everyone has a basic right to know.

The procedure turned out to be nothing short of a miracle in my eyes. Before the procedure I experienced stomach and back pain, stomach bloating, bowel problems and extremely heavy bleeding and clotting (which seemed to last a minimum 2 weeks out of every month). I was afraid to leave the house because I might bleed through my clothes (it happened more times than I care to remember, even though I used the strongest tampons and pads available).

I travel extensively for business and attempted to plan my trips around my monthly cycle. I enjoy biking during warm weather and had to stop because of the heavy bleeding. Life was not good for almost a year.

I went through several other surgical procedures that were not successful and was told the only option left was a hysterectomy. I would not accept the hysterectomy as being the only solution. I had been to Dr. Hutchins years before when I lived in PA and decided to find him again. I trusted his opinion and decided to ask him for a second opinion. Dr. Hutchins lead me to Dr. Kirsch and now I have my life back.

It's been 1 year since I had the UAE procedure. Recovery time was approximately 4 days instead of 6 to 8 weeks for a hysterectomy. My fibroids (as of 5/97) shrunk to approximately 40% of their original size. My stomach area is back down to its normal size. I lead a completely normal (for me) life again.I don't ever worry or think about when my menstrual cycle will begin each month. In fact, I hardly know I'm having my period. I can actually use regular tampons during my menstruation.

I would have the procedure over again in a heartbeat! It saved me needless pain and suffering and gave me my life back. I'm very grateful to both Drs. Hutchins and Kirsch.

Thanks!

Hello Dr. Kirsch,

I just wanted to thank you for your expertise and gentle manner. The staff at Roxborough was exceptionally attentive and very kind. My recuperation took about two weeks and over the course of the last 4-1/2 months, my periods are normal again, and the symptoms of anemia have been fading. I've been to see a highly regarded fibroid OB/GYN in New York named Dr. Hutcherson, and she was impressed with the results. She urged me to try IVF, even at 45 years of age, if I wished to. ...

Again, thank you for being on the planet, and I have recommended the embollization procedure to several women already. As we discussed, I am an advertising art director, should you decide to expand your practice. :-)

Dear Dr. Worthington-Kirsch

Re: Uterine Artery Embolization

I had been suffering from fibroid tumors for a period of over ten years. My bleeding from the fibroids was so intense that it resulted in three blood transfusions.

My GYN of ten years could only suggest to me that I have a hysterectomy or live with them. At that point, I went for a second opinion and was given two choices one a hysterectomy or a myomectomy if possible. At 41 years old, my choice was to live with them and suffer with them until seeing your advertisement on World News.

I am pleased to say that after having the procedure done on April 3, 1997, that I recovered very quickly (48 hours), only experiencing cramping and light pelvic pain during the first couple of days. Since April 3, 1997 I have not experienced any abnormal bleeding. My periods are back to normal (5 days normal bleeding instead of 10 days of extremely heavy bleeding).

I no longer have to wear a sanitary napkin every day, not knowing if I was going to bleed or not. Thank you for a job well done and a wonderful sex life again.

Sincerely,
C.S.C.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

Last month, August 9th, you performed the Emboliztion procedure on me and I just wanted to take a few minutes of your time to update you on how I'm doing.

Sincerely,
B.I.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

Happy New Year!

Just a note to follow up on the results of my UAE at Roxborough Memorial Hospital from this past June... (this woman had UAE on 31 May 2000)

I FEEL GREAT!! The uncomfortable, heavy, bloated, unbalanced feeling I had with that "basketball of a fibroid" in my belly is gone! No more pressure on my bladder either.

And I look great too! The fibroid has shrunk considerably and my stomach is back to it's normal, flat self . No more bulging.

But the biggest relief is that I addressed the problem (without major surgery) and I no longer have that continual worry in the back of my mind that I need to take action against a growing fibroid. My fibroids are under control. The UAE procedure worked very successfully on me and I am grateful that UAE was an option for me. Thank you Dr. Kirsch for all of your pioneering research and dedication to fibroid treatment which has made this non-invasive procedure available to women dealing with fibroid tumors. Also, thank you for your advanced educational efforts (i.e. internet site) that have brought awareness to women worldwide that there is an alternative option to myomectomies for fibroid treatment...

I would also recommend that the spinal become standard with the procedure. I was glad I opted for it for pain control rather than increased medication.

Please extend my sincerest expression of gratitude and appreciation to Mary Ann, Gara, and the nurses in your unit at Roxborough. I can't begin to tell you how comfortable and relaxed they made me feel during the entire experience. Their patience and warmth were just what a nervous girl needed. They were the best!

If anyone is considering UAE and wishes to speak with me feel free to give me their email and I will contact them.

...All the best to you, your family, and your staff for a healthy and prosperous 2001.

Warmest Regards,

Hi Dr. Kirsch,

I just wanted to let you know that I have been sending messages to the media asking them to keep women updated on the UAE procedure. If anyone is interested in also motivating the media to keep women's concerns updated, I would be happy to send them a spreadsheet with all the websites, email addresses, and editors names. I think that the work and case study that you are doing is very important and needs to be addressed by the media. The following, for your information, is how I have put together my experience to share with others.

I had my UAE performed September 6, 2001 and I am #1071 in the CIRREF FIBROID Registry.

July 2001, I got the surprise that "something was growing inside of me" at my yearly exam. My OB/Gyn was quite surprised at the discovery since my uterus and fibroids had grown quite huge in only one year's time. He immediately setup a transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound for me. The ultrasound results came back that my uterus measured 11.0x7.7x6.2cm (length, width, thickness ), about the size of the uterus in a woman who is 14 weeks pregnant, and two fibroids that measured 4.5x4.7x4.8cm (the size of a Clementine orange) and 5.3x6.2x6.2cm (the size of a regular orange).

Before the UAE procedure an ultrasound was done and my uterus had grown to 16.2 cm (about the size of a 16-18 week pregnancy), the fibroids had grown to 4.5x4.7x5.1cm and 6.0x6.2x6.2cm. I was very anxious about hospitals and needles. At Roxborough Hospital the staff and Dr. Kirsch were so understanding and helpful. Dr. Kirsch came and talked to me at the Same Day Surgery area to see if I had any questions before the procedure. He asked permission to have some observes from industry present while I had the procedure. I said I did not mind since it is important to all of us to move always forward to better the procedure. During the procedure I saw the embolization particles, saw the Waltman Loop, and felt warm sensations as the procedure was done. I felt no pain during the procedure.

The pain medication kept the cramping under control and the next day, Friday, I went home. Dr. Kirsch called me on Saturday to see how I was doing.

Words can't express how wonderful a doctor he is. About 2 1/2 weeks after the procedure I had severe cramps and started to bleed and had some fibroid discharge. I left a message for him and he called me from Sweden, where he was attending a medical seminar. Dr. Kirsch always answered every e-mail and phone call personally. He never treated any questions or concerns as non-important. I have never met a doctor so in touch with how a women feels and the concerns that we have. When going through a procedure such as this having a doctor who really cares and is concerned is very critical.

At one month Dr. Kirsch called to see how I was doing and asked several questions about my symptoms at this stage of recovery. There was a sizeable improvement with all my fibroid symptoms.

At TWO MONTH check-up I had a ultrasound done at Roxborough Memorial and a consultation with Dr. Kirsch. The results were IMPRESSIVE !!!! . Uterus volume (which had been 479cc) was down to 331cc, a 31% REDUCTION. . Fundal (fibroid - located at top of uterus) volume had been 74cc and had gone down to 24cc, a 68% REDUCTION. LUS (fibroid-located at neck of the uterus) volume had been 81cc had gone down to 44cc, a 46% REDUCTION.

At this writing I am very pleased with how good I feel physically and the mental relief of knowing that the fibroids have stopped growing. I have more energy and can physically do things I couldn't do before the UAE because of the changes the fibroids were doing to my body.

In closing, my husband says that he is and always will be thankful to Dr. Kirsch for giving him back the happy, motivated, positive, and healthy wife he had lost over the past two years to this disease.

Dr. Kirsch,

It was exactly one year ago today when I had my UAE at Roxborough. At the risk of sounding overdramatic, that surgery literally changed my life. If you will recall, I used to lose so much blood each month that my life totally revolved around my period. There were times when I couldn't get to work because I didn't have the energy to stand. I'm a lawyer, so you can understand how that could be a problem. Right before the surgery, I was trapped in the bathroom at work for 2 hours because I bled all over the floor and my clothing, and I had to wait for someone to bring a change of clothes from home so I could go to the emergency room.

Now, my cycles are normal. I don't lose much blood, I don't have the debilitating cramps I used to have, and most importantly, I do not have to plan my life around my period any longer. I once bled for 45 days straight; now I'm usually done in 5 days or less. It's a whole different ballgame.

I am forever grateful. Thank you for your help.

Hi Dr. Kirsch,

I saw my ob/gyn today. This is the second time since my late-May 2000 procedure (I'm # 702). My doctor said "you still have fibroids but they have not grown." I think that's about as much as I'm going to get in the way of congratulations for making a better choice than partial or full hysterectomy.

I'm so grateful I found you.

I noticed in someone's email they suggested the spinal be standard with this procedure. I disagree. If you remember, I didn't need the morphine pump or the Percocet. I think you should keep both options.

Editorial Note: Individuals have very different experiences of discomfort after UAE. This is the specific reason why both Conscious Sedation and Spinal Analgesia are offered as options for patient choice. Click here for more information on this issue.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

I underwent the procedure one year ago in April. I was recently examined by my gynecologist, who informed me that my uterus has decreased in size by two thirds. All my symptoms(bleeding, pressure, anemia) have gone away. My clothes even fit better around the waist. I can not thank you enough.

I was diagnosed with fibroid tumors about ten years ago, but the doctor said they were small and wanted to watch them. Last year they began to grow rapidly and I now my uterus is the size of a woman that is five months pregnant. Just this past February 1999, my doctor suggested a hysterectomy informing me there wasn't any other procedure available. Thank God for the internet. I started surfing the WEB and came across other women in the same or have been in this situation. I wasn't alone. They lead me to some fantastic sites. ... After reading that site and today reading this site I am convinced that I am not going to have a hysterectomy like my mother and three sisters. Now all I have to do is get my insurance to pay for this procedure. Please keep informing women and telling us to seek out information and a second opinion. My sister didn't have any children and now she can't. Thank you for this website. I wish she knew about it last year. She said it was the worse thing she had ever been through and wished that she never had it done. Again thank you.

Dear Dr. Kirsch,

I wish that your site were available when I suffered through my fibroids last year! Uterine embolization was not as well known and I had a hard time finding info on the procedure.

I'm 35 years old and I haven't had children (my mother had a complete hysterectomy at 36 because of fibroids). My bleeding was so bad that I needed to have a blood transfusion. After 4 months of heavy menstrual bleeding I didn't think I could stand any major surgery. I went to four different GYNs and each wanted to perform a myomectomy or put me on hormones. Unless I brought up the subject of embolization not one of those doctors offered it as an option. Each one also had some horrible reason why I shouldn't even give it consideration.

I did my own research and after finding out that embloization had been done successfully for over 8 years in France and that my chances to have children were just as good as any, I was convinced and opted to have the procedure. It was the best thing for me. I was out of the hospital in a day and back to work within 4 days. I only suffered heavy cramping the first four hours in which I was given medication to relieve. The next day I needed only aspirin for the cramps. I was back to my regular exercise in a week. My periods are lighter and shorter. My last ultrasound showed that I have significant shrinkage and one less fibroid altogether!

Just tell women that they have to do thier homework. The right procedure is out there for you. Sometimes it just takes a little persistence and patience!

Dear Dr.

I will be eager to see the results of my 3-month ultrasound!

Thanks again. I would have no trouble recommending you and this procedure to other women.

Dr. Kirsch,

... I really have not shared my progress but let me pass it on to you so you know. The UAE has done everything I had hoped it would do. My periods have been as light as they used to be back in my 20's my stomach is much flatter than it was before. Frequent trips to the bathroom are no longer necessary and the small leakage I used to have immediately following my period is totally gone. It really has dramatically improved my life. I can't tell you the relief it is not to worry about embarrassing spotting, overflow etc. It truly is a procedure that helps people a great deal. My uterus was very large and my dominant fibroid pretty big 13CM. I know it is still there but all the really difficult to live with symptoms are gone and women should have this choice. I could feel a difference in the fullness in my abdomen within a week.

Thank you again for the excellent job you did.

Dear Dr. Berkowitz,

Thank you for your follow-up call.

My internist and OB are pleased with the shrinking progress of the fibroids. There is minimal cramping, light to moderate flow for 6 days...

I am very pleased with the results of the procedure and have recommended it to my friends and co-workers.

Your website is really helpful. I was much relieved after I learned what uterine fibroid is and what management options are available. My Gynocologist in Hong Kong scared me a lot by asking me to have operation even though I'm totally asymptomatic. Thanks again for your good work!
