Hysterectomy is the most radical surgical procedure for the treatment of uterine fibroids. It involves the removal of the uterus from the pelvis which requires that all of the supporting ligaments holding the uterus in place be severed. In order to accomplish this, the major ligaments which support the floor of the pelvis must be severed and reconnected to the upper part of the vagina. As a consequence, one of the complications that can be associated with hysterectomy is loss of support of the pelvic floor. Hysterectomy ONLY means removal of the uterus, and does not include removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy).
There are multiple options available for the performance of hysterectomy should it become necessary or desirable. These include:
Abdominal hysterectomy
Requires major abdominal incision
Vaginal hysterectomy
Uterus removed through the vagina without an abdominal incision.
Laparascopic hysterectomy
Minimally invasive surgery performed with a scope inserted into the abdomen.
