Uterine Fibroid Management
This is an overview of methods for management of uterine fibroids. Each section includes descriptions of the therapies and discussion of how patients are selected for each therapy.

  • Hysterectomy - the most radical surgical procedure for the treatment of uterine fibroids: removal of the uterus.
  • Myomectomy - a surgical procedure to cut fibroids out of the wall of the uterus.
  • Uterine Artery Embolization - a minimally invasive, short (under 1 hour), safe and effective treatment in which the uterus and fertility is preserved.
  • Medical Therapy - drugs that can be used in the treatment of fibroids.
  • Endometrial Ablation - destruction of the lining of the uterus, not to be used for women who might become pregnant.
  • Myolysis - procedures which destroy the fibroids in the uterus without necessarily removing them.
  • MRgFUS - used to kill fibroid tissue a portion at a time, similar to the shock wave treatments done for kidney stones.
