Treatments: UAE: Walkthrough: Possible Complications

The embolization procedure is invasive, and has risks just as any invasive procedure does. Complications are rare, but do occasionally occur. The most relevant are listed below:

  • Bleeding or excessive clotting at the puncture site
Bleeding is managed by the application of pressure, and rarely by surgical repair of the vessel. Clotting is managed by a repeat arteriogram and treatment with clot dissolving medications, or by surgical removal of the clot. Puncture site complications occur in fewer than 5% of cases.
  • Contrast allergy
Some people are allergic to the contrast material. Allergic reactions can range from very mild to life-threatening. Allergic reactions occur in about 1 of every 1000 people, with severe reactions much rarer.
  • Misembolization
Having the particles go to a place where they are not wanted can be a serious problem, but is extremely rare. The particles cannot get to the heart, lungs, or brain.
  • Infection
Infection can occur during the procedure, or in the first week or two after the procedure, while the fibroids are in the process of degenerating. It is also very rare. Infections can be treated with antibiotics.
  • Overall
The risk of significant or severe complications of UAE is lower than the risk of similar complications of major surgery such as myectomy.
